Freshers Fayre

Also this year we will have a stall at the legendary Freshers Fayre at the last Saturday of Freshers Week. We hope to see you there to ask any questions your might have, to find out more about us, and of course to grab some freebies.

Introduction

Tuesday 15th Sept 6pm - 7pm

 

Venue: Dalhousie LT1

 

 

We will (in-)formally introduce ourselves to everybody who has an interest in our cause. This will be an opportunity to ask questions, to sign up, and if you are interested in taking it further, to announce your interest in applying for any of our open positions.

 

Group Presentations

Thursday 24th Sept 6pm - 7pm

Presenting Groups: The effects of race on the development of long bones.

                                Ants and Ultrasound: Can you hear me?

 

 

We highly recomment coming to this talk for everybody who is interested in pursuing a project. You will have a chance to find out about 2 projects of the previous academic year, perhaps get some inspiration or even follow in the footsteps of these groups. It will be a great opportunity to ask questions and to find out more about the wonderful world of 'science for science's sake'.

 

How to write a proposal? Dr. Stephen Land

Thursday, 1st October 6pm - 7pm

This is the second time that Dr. Land supports us with his expertise in writing successful grant proposals.

 

There is a piece of "homework" in form of a google poll attached to it, that asks you to rate different proposals (all written by students) according to different criteria. This ensures a continuous cycle of peer review and improvement of the structure of proposals.


Your answers will be anonymous, and will be used for feedback during the workshop.

Research Ethics

Dr Peter Willatts

 

Dr Willatts, Chair of the University’s Ethics Committee will join us to discuss the importance of conducting ethical research. Dr Willatts will talk us through the process of applying for ethical approval, as well as the necessary considerations that need to be borne in mind when planning and developing research proposals.

Annual General Meeting

Thursday 15th October 6pm - 7pm

 

Venue: Dalhousie 2S15

 

 

During this meeting we will talk about everything that has happened last year. Events, Finances, etc, and will also vote for new. If you are interested in getting involved in DUYRA, then have a look at the 'positions' tab. For any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch.

 

Mathematics - The framework for life

Thursday 22th October 6pm - 7pm

 

Venue: Dalhousie 2S15

 

Speaker: Prof Fordyce Davidson

 

 

In this informal talk, we will discuss how mathematics can be used to better understand complex biological process. Particular emphasis will be on how mathematics can be used model how  information is transferred across spatial and temporal scales.  Examples will  range from microbiology to drug dynamics.
